Coastal Conversations: Captaining Your Own Ship with Anthony Brown

A facilitated conversation program at the Maritime Museum of BC.

About this experience

We live in a time when is it increasingly difficult to find our sense of identity and community, especially in new places where we might feel like an outsider. Discuss changing standards of acceptance and consider the opportunities and barriers that exist in our communities for newcomers. Are they equal for all of us, and what can you do to make space for yourself and others who feel like they don’t have one?

Date: Wednesday, September 27
Time: 6:00 - 8:00 PM; doors open 5:30 PM

Optional Networking and Gallery Viewing from 7:30 - 8:00 PM

Pre-registration is required.

Coastal Conversations invites participants to connect with community facilitators and MMBC staff to build cultural literacy, deeper understanding, and ultimately a more inclusive, welcoming community of diversity. Conversations may touch on sensitive topics including (but not limited to) experiences of those who are unhoused, immigration journeys, queer and trans community experiences, etc. as they relate to the maritime experience.

We are committed to ensuring that all participants experience a welcoming and safe environment in these conversations, regardless of personal background or identity. Participants can expect:

  • Clear guiding principles and expectations for conversation;

  • Co-facilitators with knowledge/experience in the topic area and training in facilitating conversations.

  • Optional readings and learning opportunities provided in advance of the conversation so participants can join the conversations with some framework to engage in discussions.

The Maritime Museum of BC is on the territories of the Lekwungen speaking peoples who have respected these lands and waters for thousands of years. It is currently located downtown at 744 Douglas Street close to Victoria’s downtown Inner Harbour and the Empress Hotel. Here, you will find exhibits, a nautical-themed gift shop, and research space.
