In this history, prepared as part of the company’s centenary observances, George Musk summarises more than ninety years of ocean, coastal and inland shipping services. More than three hundred Canadian Pacific ships are described, ships that have played an outstanding role in the development of both Canada and Canadian Pacific. Beginning with small wooden steamboats built in the company’s own shipyards 1000 feet above sea level in the Canadian Rockies, the record traces the expansion over some ninety-five years to modern oil tankers of 250,000 tons. Fleets that have made the names Empress, Duchess, Princess and Beaver synonymous with the Canadian Pacific transportation system, and ships with names such as Kyoquot, Illecillewaet, Valhalla, fort Steele and Princess Norah portray the romance of water transport. The story also tells of the major contribution made by Canadian Pacific Steamships in two world wars, when some 300,000 tons of company’s ships were lost, including the 42,000 ton Empress of Britain, the largest merchant ship lost in World War II.
