From the dust jacket –

At 11:00 AM on Wednesday, December 10, 1941, the crews of a formation of Japanese navy aircraft sighted two large warships escorted by three destroyers steaming on an easterly course some fifty miles off the coast of Malaya. One merchant ship could also be seen nearby, but there was no sign of any aircraft protecting the warships. The two larger ships were both British – the battleship HMS Prince of Wales and the battle cruiser HMS Repulse. Two of the escorting ships were also British navy ships; the third was Australian. It was the third day of the war in the Far East.

The weather was fine and clear. Lieutenant Yoshimi Shirai, the pilot of the leading Mitsubishi Type-96 aircraft, ordered his formation to attack…That night, at two Japanese-held airfields near Saigon a few hundred miles northeast of Malaya, the Japanese drank sake and celebrated their victory against the hated British.

Battleship tells for the first time the full story of the Prince of Wales and Repulse disaster. Disposing convincingly of several accepted myths, the authors take full advantage of recently released secret World War II documents from British government archives and of the Japanese Official History, which gives a fascinating view of the Japanese side of this devastating battle.
