The Victoria Fire Department has a long and distinguished history, having protected Victoria from the ravages of the “fire demon” for well over a century. It was the first department established west of Toronto, and likely, the first north of San Francisco. Since acquiring its first apparatus, which was purchased by the Hudson’s Bay Company in 1858, and organizing as a volunteer brigade in the spring of 1860, its development has been representative of other North American fire departments.
